Students who attend will likely miss two days of school, the 14th and 17th of September. To sign up,click on “Tournament Signups” in the navigation bar of the webpage, and follow the directions.

We ask that you sign up soon, as we would like a head count around when school starts. In addition, early commitment will ensure there is adequate time to practice.

2007-2008 Preliminary Schedule Released

The schedule page of the website has been updated to reflect the new 2007-2008 season schedule. Please take into account important tournament dates as you make personal plans throughout the school year. Myers Park’s standing as one of the premier forensics teams in the state and nation relies upon all of our students who attend both local and national tournaments throughout the year. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mr. West, or Mr. Kline.

Officer Meeting

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

We hope everyone has had a restful summer, and I say had because it’s already time to get off the ground with ideas, goals, and more for the debate team in the 2007-2008 season. To start it all off, we will be having an officers meeting on August 20th at 1:00 PM in Mr. West’s room. It should probably last around 1 hour, if we’re able to start on time and go over everything efficiently.

Lucas and I (Roshan) have a whole bunch of new ideas for the upcoming year, and a lot of them depend on input from the other officers, so it is imperative that you attempt to make it. If you can or cannot make it, please email Lucas at lucas.scholl@gmail.com: email him regardless of whether you can come or not so we know who to get information to.

Also, if you are an officer and are not receiving emails from the officers mailing list, please fill out the mailing list form with your info so I can get you on that list.

Thanks!

MP Debate Team in the Observer

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

The Myers Park Speech and Debate Team wass mentioned in the Charlotte Observer on Sunday August 5 with focus on Herschel’s achievements at nationals. The story is below:

The Myers Park Speech and Debate Team participated in the National Forensic League National Speech Tournament held June 17-22 in Wichita, Kan.

The forensic league is an honor society that promotes the art of speech and debate among high school students and also helps prepare students for future leadership positions. More than 93,000 students are active members of the organization.

The annual tournament features numerous events that test students’ speaking abilities. Individuals are scored based on the quality of their speech within different categories and whether they win debate sessions.

Myers Park’s Herschel Patel racked up more than 1,200 points and further showed his skill by placing second in the nation in Student Congress. During that part of the competition, students debate legislation introduced by opposing teams in a manner similar to that used in Congress.

Patel was elected as presiding officer by other competitors in the preliminary, semifinal and final chambers.

Seniors Ben Onstot, Yash Shah, Kyle Simcox and juniors Jon Fox and Roshan Sadanani also competed for Myers Park.

Congrats again to Herschel!
